A bookstore’s community is far larger than one might think. When people walk by a storefront, they think, “This place is for me!” or “There is nothing for me here.” Bookselling colleagues who have made it part of their stores’ mission to expand their reach to underserved communities will share the most effective ways for a bookstore to reach out to new customers by diversifying inventory, marketing tactics, and events.
The American Booksellers Association, a national not-for-profit trade organization, works with booksellers and industry partners to ensure the success and profitability of independently owned book retailers, and to assist in expanding the community of the book.
Independent bookstores act as community anchors; they serve a unique role in promoting the open exchange of ideas, enriching the cultural life of communities, and creating economically vibrant neighborhoods.
