IndieBound, the marketing movement developed by ABA, celebrates independent bookstores and supports localism. It was founded upon the passionate belief that healthy local economies help communities thrive. IndieBound's unique designs and resources – for in-store, online, and in the community – distinguish indies and provide consumers with curated reading options, newly discovered titles, and a real choice for buying.
Under the IndieBound umbrella booksellers can offer their customers great reads based on indie recommendations from around the country (the Indie Next List); lists of bestsellers based on sales throughout the independent channel (the Indie Bestseller List); spirited marketing messages and images (the Bookseller DIY); an online home for the local, indie message (IndieBound.org); and a national affiliate program for linking to indies for referred book sales (IndieBound Referral Fee Program).

The American Booksellers Association, a national not-for-profit trade organization, works with booksellers and industry partners to ensure the success and profitability of independently owned book retailers, and to assist in expanding the community of the book.
Independent bookstores act as community anchors; they serve a unique role in promoting the open exchange of ideas, enriching the cultural life of communities, and creating economically vibrant neighborhoods.
