The 2019 Children’s Institute, to be held June 26–28 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, will kick off the evening of Wednesday, June 26, with the Ci7 Welcome Reception and Costume Party.

Like at last year’s costume party, attendees’ costumes will be judged by a panel of industry friends, and prizes will be awarded for character costumes across a range of categories, including but not limited to:

  • Best ensemble costume
  • Best solo costume
  • Best literary animal costume
  • Best interpretation of a character

The winners in each category will be selected by judges Maggie Stiefvater, Henry Winkler, Lin Oliver, and Sergio Ruzzio.

“The Children’s Institute costume party was an absolute blast. Whether it was complimenting others on fabulous costumes or making guesses at the more obscure characters, the party was the perfect icebreaker for a room full of fellow book nerds,” said last year’s grand prize winner, Louise Marshall of Rakestraw Books in Danville, California. “Despite being surrounded by strangers, I never felt anything but welcomed and at home at Ci6, and I think a huge part of that was due to the collective enthusiasm and sincerity everyone seemed to share.”

The Ci7 Welcome Reception and Costume Party will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Oakmont Ballroom at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh–Green Tree.
