  • What is BookScan?

    • Circana BookScan is a point-of-sale tracking tool covering about 85% of trade print books sold in the US through direct reporting from major retailers, independent bookstores, and more.
  • What can I do with BookScan?

  • How do booksellers gain access to BookScan?

    • All approved reporting stores are eligible for access to BookScan. Eligible booksellers can request access or more information by filling out this brief survey.
  • Can bookstores check their sales and/or reporting status via BookScan?

    • No. All BookScan data is in the aggregate; BookScan does not provide retailer breakouts. For inquiries related to reporting, please email the ABA at [email protected].
  • What is the relationship between the ABA and BookScan?

    • As of October 2022, the ABA is BookScan’s official aggregator for independent bookstore data.
  • Is it Nielsen, NPD, or Circana BookScan?

    • US BookScan is Circana BookScan as of March 2023 following the merger between IRI and NPD.
  • Can bookstores still report to Nielsen?

    • No. All independent bookstores must report through the ABA in order to report to BookScan. Any processes for stores to transmit sales reports to Nielsen are no longer functional and have not been functional since October 2022.
  • How do bookstores get started reporting to BookScan?

    • Please reach out to the ABA at [email protected] for more information on reporting to BookScan.
