Teri Tanner believes the timing is right to open a 24,000-square-foot indie bookstore in Plano, Texas. The managing partner of Legacy Books, scheduled for a soft opening in the northern suburb of Dallas at the end of October, told BTW, "It's a whopper, but the timing is great. Idlewild Books: A Trip Around the World

On Sunday, April 20, Idlewild Books will open near Union Square in New York City with an inventory of 6,000 titles, all of them arranged according to country. Rita Maggio, a retired public school principal, is opening BookTowne, a general bookstore in Manasquan, New Jersey, this May. Her 900-square-foot store will occupy the space that was previously home to Landmark Books. Dubuque Bookstore to Have a Second Edition

As the six founding partners of 17-year-old River Lights Bookstore in Dubuque, Iowa, prepare to close the store and dissolve their partnership on May 31, one of those partners, Sue Davis, is preparing to open River Lights, 2nd Edition on June 1. The 2nd Edition will open in a new location, with new fixtures, inventory, POS system, and sidelines. What will remain the same, said Davis, is the same great staff, the phone number, and the square footage -- 2,000 square feet. One of her former partners will continue to work at the store as a part-time employee.

Dennise Sleeper of Spellbound Books & Gifts in Homestead, Florida, described the store's soft opening on December 21 as "quiet." At the grand opening, however, which took place one month later, the 3,250-square-foot general bookstore was so packed "there was hardly room to turn around."
