ABA has announced the lineup for the 2002 Book Sense Reading Room, to be held at BookExpo America on Saturday, May 4, from 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. The annual event, long a bookseller favorite, features four talented writers reading in a relaxed, intimate setting. In the past, such authors as Raymond Carver, Richard Ford, Alice McDermott, and Ann Patchett have appeared at the Reading Room. There is no charge for the Reading Room, and the event is open to all badged attendees.
In an era where there is more retail space devoted to selling books than ever before, starting, sustaining, and growing a profitable bookstore business requires that each person in a management role fully understand the fundamentals of book retailing. There will be a particularly strong focus on professional development, education, and networking at this year's BookExpo America -- a centerpiece of which will be a full day of programming on Thursday, May 2, at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City.
With BookExpo America and the ABA Annual Convention back in New York for the first time since 1991, ABA is inviting bookseller members from around the country to visit the association offices on Wednesday, May 1, 2002, from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
The offices are located just 20 miles north of New York City in the village of Tarrytown, along the historic Hudson River, and just across from Washington Irving's home. The ABA Board of Directors and ABA staff will be on hand at the open house to show booksellers around.
The American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE) will have something to appeal to both the serious and the fun-loving sides of the booksellers who visit New York City in May for BookExpo America. On Friday, May 3, Barbara Kingsolver will participate in an ABFFE panel on the impact of the September 11 terrorist attacks on civil liberties. And on Saturday night, the Rock Bottom Remainders will rock Greenwich Village in a Book Industry Foundation concert to benefit ABFFE and the Association of American Publishers' Get Caught Reading campaign.
