The Women's National Book Association (WNBA) is calling for nominations for the Lucile Micheels Pannell Awards, honoring bookstores that excel at inspiring interest in reading and creatively bringing books and young people together. WNBA will present the awards to two bookstores -- one general and one children's specialty bookstore -- at BookExpo America 2008 in Los Angeles.
Each recipient will receive a check for $1,000 plus a framed piece of original art by a children's book illustrator.

On Thursday, October 11, Doris Lessing was named the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature for 2007. In announcing the award, the Swedish Academy described Lessing as "that epicist of the female experience, who with skepticism, fire, and visionary power has subjected a divided civilization to scrutiny."

On Wednesday, October 10, the National Book Foundation announced the finalists for this year's National Book Awards. Author and social critic Camille Paglia made the announcement at the Library Company in Philadelphia. The winner in each of the four categories -- Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, and Young People's Literature -- will be announced at the National Book Awards Benefit Dinner and Ceremony in Manhattan on November 14. Each winner receives $10,000 plus a bronze statue; each finalist received a bronze medal and a $1,000 cash award.
