Congress to Extend Patriot Act Without Increased Privacy Protections

On February 24, the Senate passed a one-year extension of the expiring sections of the USA Patriot Act with no changes. Without the requisite 60 votes to end a possible filibuster by Republican senators, Democratic leaders were forced to abandon changes designed to protect privacy previously agreed to by the Senate Judiciary Committee, according to the Washington Post.

Permanent Press Sees Green in Doris Buffett Biography

Permanent Press has high hopes for its upcoming release of Giving It All Away: The Doris Buffett Story. "It's one of those things that could hit really big," said co-publisher Martin Shepard.

As a sign of its confidence -- and as part of a "green marketing plan" -- the press has decided to make the book available to all its accounts, including independent bookstores, on a nonreturnable basis only. The discount is 60 percent for a purchase of five or more copies.

Virginia Moves Closer to E-Fairness; More States Introduce Sales Tax Equity Bills

This week, the Virginia State Senate voted overwhelmingly to pass e-fairness legislation, while senators in Maryland and Illinois introduced bills that would bring about sales tax equity for thousands of retailers in their states. In addition, legislators in California appear to be moving closer to bringing about e-fairness in the state. And, in Colorado, members of the State House of Representatives passed a uniquely amended version of sales tax legislation that looks to focus on consumer use tax compliance, and it is expected that Gov. Bill Ritter will sign the bill into law.
