'Indie Lit Revealed' at New York's Public Library

Today’s literary publishers are keepers of the written word, Dan Simon, publisher of Seven Stories Press (Noam Chomsky’s 9-11), told a crowd of more than 45 potential and present-day literary publishers and writers at the New York Public Library’s Berger Forum on Wednesday, March 20. And, he added, it’s unfortunate that today’s publishing environment dictates that something so normal as publishing quality books and stories is considered "radical."

ABA Forums in Idaho and New Mexico Cover New Strategic Plan and BTW

Last weekend was a busy one for the ABA. On Friday, March 22, booksellers gathered for a Booksellers Forum and financial seminar, held in conjunction with the Mountains and Plains Booksellers Association (MPBA) Spring Meeting, at the Marriott Downtown in Albuquerque, New Mexico; and on Saturday, March 23, over 35 booksellers attended a forum and Book Sense seminar, held in conjunction with the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Spring Trade Show, at the Coeur D’Alene Resort in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho.

This general-interest bookstore, noted for its author events, classes, conferences, and extensive travel books section, hosted a day of free, festive activities. Virginia Festival of the Book Rooted in a Community of Rich Culture

For two centuries, Charlottesville, Virginia, has drawn men and women of letters to live in its cultured environs: from Thomas Jefferson (whose Monticello is three miles east of the city) to current residents John Grisham, Rita Mae Brown, and National Book Award-winner John Casey.

New Poetry Series Finds Independent Bookseller Fans in New England

When Cicely Buckley of Oyster River Press set out to publish the entire Walking to Windward chapbook series in one fell swoop, it was a major undertaking. But she couldn't resist adding 11 titles to the original group, ending up with an extraordinary enterprise -- 21 poetry chapbooks encased in four box-set volumes each containing four to five individual titles.

"I don't know of any other series like this," she told BTW, about publishing more than 600 pages of poetry in six months for a December 31 publication date.

There's Still Time to RSVP for ABA's Open House

As a special way to welcome booksellers to BookExpo America and the ABA Convention, the association is sponsoring an Open House for booksellers at its headquarters in Tarrytown, New York, on May 1 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The offices are located at 828 South Broadway in Tarrytown, just 20 miles north of New York City, along the historic Hudson River, and just across from Washington Irving's home. ABA Board of Directors and staff will be on hand at the open house, and refreshments will be served.
