Rising Titles: Some Children's Book Picks From BEA 2002

This year, children's books include plenty of the edgy, the rude, the ironic, and the classic. As always, some are just plain fun. Booksellers on the show floor at BookExpo America remarked that many publishers were promoting books that "made children and parents feel more secure." According to publishers, although few post September 11 books were available, any books featuring "community workers," including firefighters, police officers, and other rescue workers, were moved to the front of displays.

Bookseller, Dr. Sharon Ames-Dennard, Named '2002 Working Mother of the Year.'

Before 1989, Dr. Sharon Ames-Dennard -- who in April was named "2002 Working Mother of the Year" by Working Mother magazine -- had never set eyes on a black bookstore. There were none in her rural hometown of Cheapside, Virginia -- population 1,000 -- nor any in the areas of Florida where she attended graduate and undergraduate schools. But an internship in Los Angeles led her to the Aquarius, Eso Won Books, and other black bookstores in the area, where she discovered a new passion.

Olsson's Books & Records to Close Its Georgetown Store

On May 29, Olsson’s Books & Records, an independent book and record store with nine (soon to be eight) branches in the greater Washington, D.C., area, has announced that it will be closing its Georgetown store at the end of June.

Upcoming Book Sense Ads in The New Yorker

The June 17 issue of The New Yorker -- on newsstands the week of June 10 -- will feature two ads highlighting Book Sense 76 selections. One ad will feature the 2002 Book Sense Book of the Year adult fiction winner, Peace Like a River (Atlantic Monthly Press), and Gould’s Book of Fish (Grove Press), a May/June 2002 Book Sense 76 pick.

The other ad in the issue will feature The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint (Vintage), which was a July/August 2001 Book Sense 76 selection.
