Historic Wilkie's Bookstore and Café to Close

The Dayton Board of Education's purchase of an office building in downtown Dayton will cause the permanent closing of Wilkie's Bookstore and Café, Ohio's oldest independent bookstore. Wilkie's occupies 3,800 square feet in the corner of the building owned by Reynold & Reynolds. According to press accounts in the Dayton Daily News, school officials want to use that space as a public meeting room when they consolidate the Board's offices there in a $15.5 million transaction.

The Son of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg Writes of An Execution in the Family

June 19, 2003, marks the 50th anniversary of the executions of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg for "conspiracy to commit espionage." Although the highly publicized case has always been referred to as a trial for treason and high-level atomic espionage -- passing the secret of the atom bomb to the Soviet Union -- those crimes were not charged. No one has ever proven that the Rosenbergs, left-wing, Jewish parents of two young boys, living on the lower east side of Manhattan, passed any classified materials of any kind.

On Thursday, June 5, Good Morning America announced that Samaritan (Knopf) was the latest book chosen by the show's "Read This!" book club. The whodunit by Richard Price was a top ten pick on the January/February 2003 Book Sense 76.

Booksellers looking to print out a copy of Bookselling This Week will find a new sub-heading called "Marketplace," which features both classified ads and the advertising found in BTW's weekly e-mail. When you choose to print the whole issue, Marketplace will automatically be printed with the issue; if you choose to create your own issue of BTW, you have the option of including Marketplace -- simply click the box that says, "Include BTW Marketplace?"
