Correction

The bookseller's quote that appears for the novel Budda Da (Carroll & Graf) in the upcoming 2004 August Picks fliers is incorrect due to an editing error. The novel is set in Scotland, and it uses Scottish vernacular. The description should read: "A housepainter's search for a larger dimension to his life lands him at the local meditation center, leading to domestic disruptions that are anything but calming.

Public Support for First Amendment Freedoms Makes a Comeback

According to this year's annual State of the First Amendment survey, conducted by the First Amendment Center in collaboration with American Journalism Review magazine, although deeply shaken by the terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001, Americans' support for their First Amendment freedoms has bounced back to pre-9/11 levels. The survey, conducted by the Center for Survey Research & Analysis at the University of Connecticut, includes 1,000 respondents contacted by telephone between May 6 and June 6, 2004.

NEA Finds Literary Reading in Dramatic Decline

On Thursday, July 8, the National Endowment for the Arts released the results of a survey that found literary reading among Americans declined 10 percentage points from 1982 to 2002, representing a loss of 20 million potential readers. Fewer than half of American adults are now reading literature, according to the study findings, which were announced by NEA Chairman Dana Gioia during a news conference at the New York Public Library.
