'Tis the season to watch out for scams and credit card fraud. Along with the many joys of the holiday season come persistent attempts by some to swindle booksellers and other small retailers with a host of old and new ploys. Some scams may seem obvious to experienced booksellers, but all new staff and holiday extras may need special training in identifying the many varieties of fraud.

Powell's New Beaverton Store -- Twice as Nice

On Friday, November 17, Powell's Books of Portland, Oregon, celebrated the grand opening of its new store in the recently renovated Cedar Hills Crossing shopping center in Beaverton. Hundreds of customers attended the opening, which included a reception and an author reading with Mireille Guiliano. The 32,500-square foot space is approximately double the size of Powell's previous Beaverton location at Cascade Plaza.

Simpson's book, If I Did It, but also that it was sold to them as a "blind" title, with no information available about author or subject matter. In an open letter to publishers, Leslie Ryan, owner of Off the Beaten Path Bookstore in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, calls for a better way.
