Mary Gordon Wins the Story Prize

On February 28, The Stories of Mary Gordon (Pantheon Books) was named the winner of the third annual Story Prize at the packed New School's Tishman Auditorium in New York City. The Lives of Rocks by Rick Bass (Houghton Mifflin) and In Persuasion Nation by George Saunders (Riverhead Books) were the other contenders for the award.

Dubuque Bookstore to Have a Second Edition

As the six founding partners of 17-year-old River Lights Bookstore in Dubuque, Iowa, prepare to close the store and dissolve their partnership on May 31, one of those partners, Sue Davis, is preparing to open River Lights, 2nd Edition on June 1. The 2nd Edition will open in a new location, with new fixtures, inventory, POS system, and sidelines. What will remain the same, said Davis, is the same great staff, the phone number, and the square footage -- 2,000 square feet. One of her former partners will continue to work at the store as a part-time employee.

School's Out for Summer: Ex-Principal to Open Seaside Bookstore

Rita Maggio, a retired public school principal, is opening BookTowne, a general bookstore in Manasquan, New Jersey, this May. Her 900-square-foot store will occupy the space that was previously home to Landmark Books. When Maggio learned that the owner of Landmark Books was relocating, she acted quickly and secured a lease, which begins today, March 1.

Powell's Invites Booksellers to Think 'Out of the Book'

Powell's Books in Portland, Oregon, is inviting independent booksellers to participate in its soon-to-launch film project, "Out of the Book," by hosting screenings of the inaugural movie this June. The New Yorker will premier the film -- a 23-minute movie about a book by a bestselling, prize-winning author -- at a party in New York City during BookExpo America. Two weeks later, Powell's will offer the film, free of charge, to other independent booksellers as the centerpiece of a nationally promoted event series.
