ABA Education Meetups feature a rotating selection of bookstore education programming on the second Thursday of every month.
Join ABA for a live virtual encore of our fall regional show education session, This is a Fire Drill: Preparing for and Avoiding Crises. Structured around some of the top crises stores have experienced in the past year, ABA's Director of Education, Kim Hooyboer, will review best practices for bookstore emergency preparedness. From cybersecurity threats to a car driving into the store, we will provide resources and tips to prepare for and, when possible, avoid these crises at your store. Topics will include: fire, flood, and natural disasters; protesters, break-ins, and ransomware, credit card fraud, and more. Throughout the session, we’ll explore ways to respond to these crises, prioritize employee communication, and mitigate the risk of these events occurring at your store. Think of this session as insurance and take this time to invest in protecting your business.

BIPOC — Black, Indigenous, or People of Color — booksellers and bookstore owners are invited to join a call to share ideas for future sessions; needs for ABA services, programming, and general support; and questions with ABA CEO Allison Hill, ABA COO Joy Dallangera-Sanger, ABA Director of Membership Ryan Quinn, and DEIA & Member Relations Manager Mariana Calderón.
The ABA team will attend from 7:30pm EST to 8:00pm EST, and the BIPOC Meetup will then continue as a typical Affinity Group meeting until 9:00pm EST.
Based on feedback from the Fall 2023 Affinity Groups survey, meetings may be attended by and facilitated by DEIA Member Relations Manager, Mariana Calderón, though facilitation by volunteer bookseller will be prioritized, pending availability of volunteers.
Booksellers interested in attending should visit their Member Dashboard and join through Email Subscriptions. Don't have a login? Request one here.
BIPOC allies and booksellers who do not identify as BIPOC should not plan to attend. We appreciate your help maintaining the BIPOC meet-up as a closed space for BIPOC booksellers and BIPOC bookstore owners only.
