In advance of Earth Day 2009 (April 22), Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing provided a "green" box in the Spring Children's White Box mailing, which shipped late last month to bookstores active in the IndieBound movement. The eco-friendly "recycled and recyclable promotion-in-a-box" serves to emphasize the green mission of S&S's line of Little Green Books.

"Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing is thrilled to be providing the Green Box promotion to booksellers as they prepare for Earth Day events," said Julie Powell Christopher, senior marketing manager, licensed and novelty publishing for S&S Children's Publishing. "The mission of the Little Green Books series is to plant the seeds of earth-friendly living at an early age, and by utilizing the information we've provided in the Green Box, bookstores can join us in that goal."

The green box includes signage on the reverse side of the box lid, a poster (printed on recycled paper) with Earth Day activity ideas, and a pack of plant-able bookmarks that sprout wildflowers. S&S Children's Publishing is working with Eco-Libris to plant trees through their partner Trees for the Future, and for every 50 copies sold of various S&S Earth Day titles listed in the brochure, they will plant a tree (up to 100,000 trees). Booksellers are receiving an extra two percent discount for ordering titles from the downloadable Earth Day brochure, which includes additional promotion information. Further Earth Day suggestions are available at www.SimonLittleGreen.com. Response to the green box has been very positive, said Powell Christopher. --Karen Schechner
