The first phase of the Campaign for Reader Privacy (www.readerprivacy.com/) -- a nationwide grassroots petition drive calling for an amendment to Section 215 of the USA Patriot to ensure the privacy of bookstore and library records -- continues through the weekend of May 15. ABA has been asking booksellers to send in signed petitions whenever they have collected a few hundred signatures, and then on May 17 to mail in all remaining petitions.

"We hope that booksellers will continue the great job they are doing and collect signatures through next weekend and beyond," said ABA COO Oren Teicher. "We've already received tens of thousands of signed petitions, but a final big push during this first phase can bring that number up even higher." Teicher noted that booksellers are being encouraged to keep collecting signatures even after this first phase draws to a close.

The Campaign for Reader Privacy petition drive will culminate with a CRP presentation during BookExpo America, which will be held from June 2 - 6 at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago.

Petition pads can be ordered by calling ABA's Information Department at (800) 637-0037, ext. 1292 or 1293, or for a downloadable PDF of the petition, click here.
