Day of Education Panelist Among Pulitzer Winners

Jon Meacham, a panelist at next month's ABA Day of Education keynote event, is among the winners of the 2009 Pulitzer Prizes announced on Monday, April 20. Meacham was honored in the Biography category for American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House (Random House).

Other Pulitzer winners in the fields of Letters, Drama, and Music include:

  • Fiction: Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout (Random House)
  • General Nonfiction: Slavery by Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II by Douglas A. Blackmon (Doubleday)
  • History: The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family by Annette Gordon-Reed (Norton)
  • Poetry: The Shadow of Sirius by W.S. Merwin (Copper Canyon)
  • Drama: Ruined by Lynn Nottage
  • Music: Double Sextet by Steve Reich, premiered March 26, 2008, in Richmond, Virginia (Boosey & Hawkes)

Last week, ABA announced an impressive lineup of authors, publishing execs, and booksellers at the forefront of the industry participating in the Thursday, May 28, Day of Education, sponsored by Ingram Book Group/Ingram Publishers Services. On the keynote panel with Meacham will be the much-honored author, poet, and filmmaker, Sherman Alexie, the winner of this year's inaugural Indies Choice Book Award for Most Engaging Author; James Patterson, finalist for the 2009 Children's Choice Book Awards "Author of the Year" for The Final Warning, the fourth book in his highly praised Maximum Ride series; and Lisa Scottoline, author of more than 12 legal suspense novels, which have appeared on national bestsellers including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Los Angeles Times. The panel, moderated by Roxanne Coady, owner of R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, Connecticut, will focus on the importance of the relationship between authors and independent bookstores, and exploring how that relationship can continue to grow and prosper in challenging times.
