March Bookstore Sales Outpace Overall Retail

March bookstore sales continued the generally upward trend of the last 10 months, according to preliminary figures recently released by the Bureau of the Census. March 2004 bookstore sales of $1,076 million were 11.7 percent better than the $963 million for March 2003.

Bookstore sales in March outpaced overall retail sales. Overall retail sales were $336 billion for March 2004, 10.5 percent better than the $304 billion of the previous year.

Lonely Planet Bookstore Tour -- Day 5

On Saturday, May 8, Lonely Planet, the independent travel publisher, began a tour of independent bookstores that will end on Thursday, June 3, in Chicago at BookExpo America. In a break from the past, ABA's presence at this year's BookExpo America (BEA) will be centralized in the ABA/Book Sense Lounge rather than split between the lounge and a booth on the trade show floor. The ABA/Book Sense Lounge, in Room 401, will feature all the usual information and services provided at ABA's trade floor booth, as well as a place to kick back, relax, and check e-mail. The Lounge is situated close to all of ABA's educational programming.

Lonely Planet Bookstore Tour -- Day 4

Tuesday, May 11, day four of the Lonely Planet Independent Bookstore Tour, started with an early visit to Susan Little's Jabberwocky Bookshop in Newburyport, Massachusetts. The 32-year-old bookstore is housed in an indoor market that was formerly a tannery mill near the Merrimack River. Bookseller Claire Eaton pointed out that Henry Walden Thoreau wrote A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers about his experience floating down the river, and, of course, the store always keeps copies of the Thoreau title in stock.

On Monday, May 24, at a ceremony at Chelsea Piers in New York City, two women who helped organize a grassroots campaign to amend Section 215 of the USA Patriot Act will be among those honored with the Playboy Foundation's 2004 Hugh M. Hefner First Amendment Award. Trina Magi, past president of the Vermont Library Association (VLA), and Linda Ramsdell, owner of the Galaxy Bookshop in Hardwick, Vermont, will receive the First Amendment Award in the field of Education. "I'm excited and honored that we're recognized," said Ramsdell.

Redstone, a large open-air development of residences, offices, and retail establishments in Park City, Utah, is looking for an experienced, independent bookseller to open a store in the heart of the commercial activity. The center, which will be fully operational by the fall, is home to a variety of businesses -- some local, some national chains. New Hampshire Bookstore Seeks Highly Qualified New Owner

White Birch Books, a 12-year-old fixture in the resort community of North Conway, New Hampshire, has been put up for sale by the store's founder, Donna Urey. Urey told BTW that this decision has not been made impulsively nor as a result of any misfortune, personal or financial. "The store is happy and healthy and so am I," Urey said. "My husband and I have reached the point where we want to spend more time with our grandchild, and with the one on the way.
