Obituaries: Bill Banks and Peter Greeman

Bill Banks, longtime co-owner of the former Market Bookshop in Falmouth, Massaschusetts, died on October 18. He was 86.

After serving in the Army Air Corps in World War II, Banks had a successful career in international advertising and marketing. In 1970, Bill and his wife, Caroline, bought the Market Bookshop, which they expanded to include the Market Barn Gallery, where they sold paintings, prints, and sculptures. For a number of years, they operated a second bookstore in Woods Hole. The couple retired from bookselling in 1999.

Bill Banks was a past president of the New England Booksellers Association and during his long bookselling career served on several committees of the American Booksellers Association. He is survived by his wife, Caroline, three sons, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for November 10 at 2:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in East Falmouth. Memorial donations may be sent to Hospice or Cape Cod Healthcare Foundation for the VNA, P.O. Box 370, Hyannis, MA 02601.

Peter A. Greeman, a resident of Larchmont, New York, died on October 22. He was 75 years old.

After graduating from Yale in 1954, he served in the Army as Public Information Officer. Following a successful career as advertising executive, in January 2000, Greeman and his wife, Tammy, bought Anderson's Book Shop, the 4,000-square-foot general bookstore in Larchmont, founded by Charles B. Anderson.

Greeman tutored at a local high school and was chairman of the Board of Community Teachers Institute in Washington, D.C. He is survived by his wife, three sons, and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be private, and the family suggests donations to a charity of your choice.
