McAdam-Cage has become the newest Publisher Sponsor of the American Booksellers Association's Second Annual Winter Institute, which will be held in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday and Friday, February 1 and 2, 2007. An independent publisher, with operations in San Francisco and Denver, MacAdam/Cage is providing financial support for the Institute and sponsoring a scholarship that will be awarded randomly to an ABA member bookseller who has an account with the publisher. They join a growing list of sponsors whose support is making it affordable for booksellers to attend.

Some of the materials to be provided to booksellers at the two-day education event are also being underwritten. Boku Books, which manufactures environmentally positive journals, notebooks, and art paper, is providing specially made spiral notebooks that will be handed out to attendees at the Winter Institute Registration Desk. The first few pages of the notebooks will provide booksellers with the event schedule as well as a handy map.

And ABA affinity partner PartnerShip -- which provides a discount shipping program for ABA members -- is supplying the Winter Institute Welcome Tote Bags. Attendees will receive the Welcome Bags at the Winter Institute Registration Desk.

The Winter Institute will be held at the Doubletree Portland-Lloyd Center, where ABA has negotiated a special rate of $99 per night for attendees. All hotel reservations must be made through ABA. The hotel will not take direct reservations for this event. Booking is through an online form on the ABA site. Event registration, which is being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, will be capped at 500 booksellers.

Education sessions and special events -- which include most meals -- fill the two-day event, therefore, ABA is encouraging booksellers to arrive in Portland on Wednesday, January 31.

Programming begins at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday with a Welcome Breakfast, followed by the plenary session, "A Whole New Mind," featuring bestselling author Daniel Pink.

The Winter Institute is only open to booksellers from ABA member stores. The event registration deadline is November 15, 2006.

Questions about the Winter Institute program should be addressed to ABA Education Director Len Vlahos. Questions about hotel reservations should be sent to ABA's Margaret Nafz.
