The Book Industry Charitable (Binc) Foundation launched “Think Binc,” its 20th anniversary fundraising campaign on November 29 with the year-end goal of raising $100,000, and the book industry is responding.

Two weeks into the campaign, the Binc board of director’s matching gift challenge garnered more than $10,000 in donations, successfully completing this year’s challenge. In addition, Sourcebooks has committed to matching its employees’ gifts to Binc for a second year in a row, and Ingram Content Group is donating a gift of $10,000 on behalf of its publishing clients.

Now, the new “Pay it Forward” matching gift challenge, created by a past grant recipient as a gesture to give back to the organization that changed her life, will match up to $3,700 in donations through December 31.

The work of Binc’s 2016 ambassadors — authors Ann Patchett and James Patterson — has elevated awareness of the foundation’s mission and put its fundraising goal of $100,000 within reach, according to the organization’s executive director, Pam French. “We are grateful for all the support we’ve received,” French said. “It is essential we reach our fundraising goal this year in order to create the momentum needed to become an industry-sustained organization. Just this past month, we experienced a record number of new grant requests, so we know there is a real need for our work.”

The funds raised will help Binc provide financial assistance to booksellers facing unanticipated hardships.
