Thank You for Joining Us at Wi2025 A huge thank you from the Advocacy team to everyone at Winter Institute 2025 who stopped by the Ask Advocacy desk to talk to us about book bans, small business issues, anti-trust, other legislation of concern, and the challenges facing you in your stores. Hearing from members helps us make our work on your behalf as effective as possible. Thank you as well to everyone who donated to American Booksellers for Free Expression (ABFE) — we hope you enjoyed your gifts of shirts, hoodies, hats, and the ABA Right to Read Handbook. And a reminder: you can donate to ABFE anytime and receive a gift of ABFE swag at our Bonfire page. If you missed Philomena’s sessions at Winter Institute, don’t despair! You can check out Shelf Awareness’ coverage of “Content-Based Attacks on Stores” and “Speak Out! Legislative Activism 101.” And stay tuned for details of webinar versions to come... ABFE wants to remind you that any ABA member can reach out for free expression support at any time by emailing [email protected]. You can ask for support, see if we have any comments on your plan, or just let us know what you’ve been dealing with. The more information we have, the more effective and proactive we can be. ABA Prioritizes Tariffs Advocacy Tariffs and their potential impact on bookstores is a top priority for ABA. ABA’s Advocacy team is currently working with coalition partners to seek clarity on new tariffs that were enacted this week by the Trump Administration. Questions still remain about product exemptions and whether the exemption for informational materials includes books. Booksellers should be prepared to respond to ABA's all to action when/if the time comes to lobby for exemptions. Any booksellers with questions should contact David Grogan, Director of ABFE, Advocacy & Public Policy at [email protected].
