National Day of Action This Saturday, October 19, is a national day of action to protect the freedom to read. Organized by Unite Against Book Bans (UABB), the day of action has over 150 registered events at libraries, bookstores, and more. If you are holding an event for this day of action, make sure to register it on the site! If not, you can still show your support by sharing the day of action assets on your store’s social media accounts and linking to the UABB toolkit. ABFE and That Librarian Philomena Polefrone from American Booksellers for Free Expression (ABFE) appeared alongside Amanda Jones, librarian and author of That Librarian: The Fight Against Book Banning in America, at a virtual event hosted by our friends at Macmillan (with Bloomsbury Publishing also in attendance). She and Amanda discussed the book ban crisis, how it impacts students, booksellers, and librarians, and what can be done about it. Philomena also discussed The ABA Right to Read Handbook: Fighting Book Bans and Why It Matters (available now through Ingram). Signal Your Support for the Credit Card Competition Act The Merchants Payments Coalition (MPC), of which the American Booksellers Association is a member, is asking booksellers to sign onto a letter in support of the Credit Card Competition Act. The simple process of signing your store’s name to this letter can help move the issue forward, as the coalition works toward getting a vote on the legislation prior to the end of this year’s congressional session. Sign onto the letter now! |
