American Booksellers for Free Expression (ABFE) has been speaking to southern free expression advocates this week on social media. Our interview with Read Freely Alabama dropped just as the standoff at the Autauga-Prattville, AL public library erupted, with the library director being fired along with four librarians who walked out in solidarity. ABFE also spoke to Luis Correa of Avid Bookshop in Athens, GA on the day they announced their lawsuit against the Gwinnett County Jail for improper restrictions on independent booksellers’ ability to send books to those incarcerated in the jail. Please get in touch with [email protected] if you have experienced similar difficulties, which we understand are becoming more common nationwide. Also on social media, we covered new book ban data for 2023 from Unite Against Book Bans, which showed an increase in mass challenges of books, challenges targeting public libraries, and the total number of titles challenged in general. Finally, don’t forget to order your Banned Books Week 2024 Kit, which is free for ABA members and will arrive in early July. On the small business side: Today is SBA: Dump Amazon Day! ABA, many of our members, and other small business allies have raised their voices to tell the SBA to dump Amazon as a sponsor of National Small Business Week. Details and assets can be found on BookWeb. We are also anticipating a hearing on the Credit Card Competition Act on April 9 and are soliciting testimony from booksellers. Did the incredible 6.1% increase in credit and debit card fees in 2023 hurt your business? Write to [email protected] to tell us about it. |
