Membership Renewals
 

Booksellers: your store’s 2023 membership renewal email will arrive in January. All ABA memberships run from February 1 through January 31. Member stores can opt to pay dues on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis, but all members need to complete the renewal process to update their store’s data. Stores who have recently become members will also need to renew their membership.

The membership renewal will include an option for participation in the ABC Children’s Group ($50) and members can also choose to support the crucial advocacy work of the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFE) by adding a tax-deductible donation.

Membership benefits can be reviewed on BookWeb. Questions about dues renewal can be emailed to the Membership Team.

Binc's #ReadLoveSupport Campaign Update

The Book Industry Charitable (Binc) Foundation is excited to announce that the Members of the Binc Foundation's Board are offering a second matching donation for the year-end Read Love Support (#readlovesupport) campaign. We Need Diverse Books’ Books Save Lives Initiative

Launched on December 1, the Books Save Lives initiative from We Need Diverse Books will provide grants of up to $10,000 for underserved schools and libraries to purchase banned and challenged books; organize school visits and book giveaways for authors of banned and challenged books; and provide educational materials and resources to those trying to combat book bans at a grassroots level. Bookstores can help by:

  • Joining the social media campaign with the hashtag #BooksSaveLives.
  • Championing diverse books in your community.
  • Making a contribution.

Urge Congress to Reform the Unfair Credit Card System

ABA sent an email on Tuesday urging members to reach out to their members of Congress and ask them to support the Credit Card Competition Act. The lack of competition has caused credit card swipe fees to rise year after year. And since they are a percentage of the transaction cost, they increase with every cent of inflation. The bipartisan Credit Card Competition Act of 2022 (S. 4674/H.R. 8874) was introduced by Sens. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Roger Marshall (R-KS) in the Senate, and Reps. Peter Welch (D-VT) and Lance Gooden (R-TX) in the House, to fix this issue. Under the legislation, a credit card would be required to have more than one network option to route financial data. Reach out to your member of Congress today.

Save the date for these upcoming events: 

For 2023:

ShopTalk and ShopTalk Subsets will be combined. Sessions will occur every other month. The majority of each session will be set aside for smaller breakout groups, with the last 15 minutes of the hour reserved for a larger group discussion.

Board Office Hours and ABA Open Houses will also be combined to allow you to connect with both Board members and the ABA team. The ABA CEO and other members of the ABA staff will be in attendance. A breakout room can be provided by request if an attendee would prefer to speak with one group alone.

End of Year Insurance Reminders

ABA members should be aware that the Affordable Care Act open enrollment dates have been extended. While the Medicare annual enrollment period still ends on December 7, 2022, the open enrollment period for ACA plans has been extended to January 15, 2023. However, if you need coverage to start on January 1, the deadline is still December 15. For more information, view the email sent on December 1.
