Part of the Independent Bookstore Day (IBD) experience is offering exclusive book and book-related items created especially for the celebration. Each year, we work with publishers and vendors and the IBD Advisory Committee made up of booksellers from across the country to have limited books and bookish merchandise produced for bookstores to sell in-store or online. 

We are excited with the final catalog of exclusives for you to choose from! This year, our exclusives proudly feature authors and contributors who are Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, Black, Latinx, Chinese American, and more. It is our goal every year to include more diverse offerings and we continue to work with publishers on their exclusive submissions.

Thanks again to the IBD Advisory Committee for helping us select the exclusives that will appeal to a range of stores and customers. Please note that many items in the catalog have limits on how many your store can order so that as many stores as possible can offer exclusives. The catalog will be made available next week before ordering opens.

In advance of the IBD 2023 Exclusives Order Form and General Participation Form opening on October 21, 2022, here is what you need to know for a smooth process:

  • You must be a logged-in ABA member to access the form. If you do not know your login credentials please email us at [email protected].
  • An Ingram Ship To Account number is required. Setup an account at Ingram Onboarding.
  • Be sure to provide the shipping address (it may be different than the billing address).
  • If your store is in multiple locations, you must fill out a form for each store location (unless all ordered items can go to the main account’s location) or RDC.
  • There is a 20-item minimum needed for free shipping AND freebies. Free items, Blackwing Pencils and T-shirts do not count towards the 20-item minimum.
  • Due to supply chain issues we will not be changing orders after the closing date of November 11. 
  • Independent Bookstore Day is open to those who are members of the ABA, as well as their regional booksellers association.

As a reminder, here are a few deadlines to keep in mind as we prepare for the celebration:

  • October 21, 2022: IBD 2023 Exclusives Order Form and General Participation Form goes live through the Member Dashboard
  • November 11, 2022: Exclusives Order and Participation Form closes
  • March 8, 2023: Exclusives arrive at Ingram to ship to stores
  • March 15, 2023: IBD Bookmarks arrive at bookstores in Box Mailing
  • March 31, 2023: General Participation Form closes
  • April 3, 2023: IBD Searchable Map goes live on IndieBound
  • Early- to Mid-April: Stores receive exclusives
  • April 24–28, 2023: IBD Spirit Week
  • April 29, 2023: Independent Bookstore Day

There are two ways to participate in Independent Bookstore Day:

  • To purchase the exclusives and be included on the searchable map, sign up between October 21–November 11. You must purchase a minimum of 20 items (individually or bulk packaged — a bulk packaged item counts as one) in order to receive the freebies like bookmarks and stickers. Blackwing pencils and T-shirts do not count towards the 20-item minimum.
  • To only be included on the searchable map without any purchases, sign-ups are open October 21, 2022–March 31, 2023.
