Take Action with ABA and ABFE!
 

The American Booksellers Association and the American Booksellers for Free Expression (ABFE) are continuing to take action and have shared the following ways for booksellers to join in on bookstore advocacy efforts:

  • Support the American Innovation and Choice Online Act. Join the over 150 booksellers who have already sent 470+ messages to Congress! Let’s flood their email inboxes. Urge U.S. House and Senate lawmakers to bring The American Innovation and Choice Online Act to the floor for a vote!
  • Promote the right to read with the 5 Ways Bookstores Can Fight Books Bans! Participating in Banned Books Week and purchasing an “I Read Dangerously” T-shirt are just a couple of actions you can take to protect the right to read.
Question of the Week
Why is there no chat at Town Hall? Can Town Hall be more personable and more accessible? Can attendees be visible to one another?  
 

Thank you to those who asked questions at Town Hall about the virtual Town Hall format. We wanted to replicate an in-person Town Hall, but you’ve inspired us to think about this event in new ways altogether! What if we re-imagined this opportunity with these questions in mind, but also for members and board directors to not just ask and respond to questions, but to really have a dialogue. We welcome your input about how best to achieve that goal at [email protected]!
Action Items

Ask questions, share concerns or experiences, and/or express needs for support with the ABA team at our first Open House on Thursday, August 11, at 3:00 pm ET. For the first week, meet with ABA’s CEO Allison Hill, Marketing Manager Courtney Wallace, IndieCommerce Director Phil Davies, and ABFE (American Booksellers for Free Expression) Director Dave Grogan. Registration is required.

Booksellers are encouraged to check out the digital assets for this year’s Banned Books Week, which will be celebrated from September 18 through September 24. It includes a new Banned Books Checklist and a Banned Books BINGO game! (For those who may have already downloaded the assets, there has been an update to the BINGO game: “George by Alex Gino” now reads “Melissa (previously published as George) by Alex Gino.”
