Booksellers have until the end of the day today, October 30, to place their orders for specially designed Independent Bookstore Day canvas tote bags, featuring an illustration by 2014 National Book Award nonfiction finalist Roz Chast.

ABA and the New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association are urging New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to veto a bill that discriminates against independent bookstores that mistakenly disclose customer information to the police and other third parties.
 

The Northern California Independent Booksellers Association’s fall show has been rechristened the NCIBA Discovery Show to reflect a greater emphasis on discovering new books, new authors, and new knowledge.

Asheville and the Grove Park Inn provide a unique, fun, and rewarding setting for the Winter Institute’s 10th anniversary. While getting there may be a little bit more challenging than flying into a hub city, there are a number of options that can lessen the cost and the complications.

Booksellers attending MPIBA’s Fall Discovery Show, from October 9 to 11 at Colorado’s Renaissance Denver Hotel, will find a full schedule of author events and educational programming, including a new session from ABA, “The Nuts and Bolts of Finance.”

Between September 26 and October 2, ABA will be at the trade shows of the Pacific Northwest and New England independent booksellers associations, and the Heartland Fall Forum, a combined show of the Great Lakes and Midwest regional associations.

The 2014 fall trade show season kicks off on Friday, September 19, with events in the New Atlantic and Southern regions, and ABA will be at both to present new educational programming and to meet booksellers on the trade show floor.

The Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance is looking for hosts for SHOP (the Southern Hospitality Overnight Program), an effort to provide travel alternatives for booksellers from other parts of the country who are planning to attend the 2015 Winter Institute in Asheville, North Carolina.

Copperfield’s Books’ Napa branch and Napa Bookmine are on the mend after a magnitude 6.0 earthquake rocked both stores and sent hundreds of books tumbling to their floors. 

The nine regional bookseller associations announced late last week that they were partnering to collaboratively support a national Independent Bookstore Day on May 2, 2015.
