Registration opens November 1 for Winter Institute 2017’s two Advanced Education Sessions for store owners and managers: “Understanding and Fostering Your Store Culture” and “Managing Managers.”

At “Understanding and Fostering Your Store Culture,” STYLED RETAIL™, a strategic retail consultancy with more than 50 years of collective experience, will discuss how owners and managers can foster a culture that is an extension of their store brand.  Registrants should be proactively thinking about what their store culture says about their business’ mission and ideals and come prepared to discuss their brand in order to fully utilize the information provided at this session.

The program will be facilitated by Maria Reitan and Kevin P. Quinn of STYLED RETAIL. Reitan is a strategic communicator who has worked as a reporter, producer, and news director in various television newsrooms; a public relations and advertising agency executive; and host of her own marketing radio show. Quinn uses his knowledge and expertise to diagnose retail solutions and to bring energy to his training, merchandising, product development, trend direction, and strategic consulting, as well as to his own entrepreneurial ventures, which include his own retail store and brand.

“Understanding and Fostering Your Store Culture” will take place on Sunday, January 29, from 9:20 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. in the Lakeshore B Room of the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis.

At “Managing Managers,” owners will learn strategies for communicating, delegating, training, and thriving by skillfully empowering store managers. Whether a manager is responsible for the entire store, a section, or a key function, properly managed managers take pressure off owners, allowing them to focus on big-picture business decisions while feeling secure in the knowledge that day-to-day operations will continue successfully.

This session will be facilitated by Lani Basa, owner and CEO of The Business Women’s Circle (BWC), a group providing a confidential and collaborative setting for businesswomen to foster growth and work on their businesses with the support of others. Basa has also worked for Target at multiple levels, from director of organizational effectiveness to director for human resources operations, and as the human resources development consultant for Marshall Field’s.

Basa will also serve on the panel for “Best Practices for First-Time Managers,” which will be held Sunday, January 29, from 9:20 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. in the Greenway F/G Room.

“Managing Managers” will take place on Sunday, January 29, from 3:50 p.m  to 5:00 p.m.. in the Greenway F/G Room.

Space for each Advanced Education Session is limited and open to one bookseller per store. Interested booksellers are encouraged to register as soon as possible. ABA will try to accommodate all stores that register. Assignments will be e-mailed in January, prior to the institute.

On November 1, registration will also open for the full- and half-day bookstore tours in Minneapolis; the interactive IndieCommerce Institute; and the Leadership Workshop for Owners and Managers, all of which will be held on January 27, prior to the Winter Institute Opening Reception at The Open Book.

Registration for the January 28 Bookstore Finance Seminar, a 101-level program covering the fundamentals of budgeting, understanding cash flow, business financing, bookkeeping, and financial statements, also opens November 1.
