Heading to the 2018 Winter Institute next week and planning to attend a full schedule of educational and entertaining sessions? Don’t forget to put The Thacker Mountain Radio Hour, Live! on your agenda.

The live broadcast of Thacker Mountain straight from Ballroom C&D in the Memphis Cook Convention Center is sure to be a memorable finale for Wi13. Thacker Mountain, a live radio show that features author readings and musical performances, is usually recorded in Oxford, Mississippi, during the spring and fall and rebroadcast on Mississippi Public Broadcasting. The show is currently on winter hiatus, but is performing a special program just for Winter Institute.

The show will feature singer/songwriter Dar Williams, author of What I Found in a Thousand Towns: A Traveling Musician’s Guide to Rebuilding America’s Communities — One Coffee Shop, Dog Run, and Open-Mike Night at a Time (Basic Books); poet Elizabeth Acevedo, author of the debut novel The Poet X (HarperTeen), out March 6, 2018; and Cold Mountain author Charles Frazier, author of Varina (Ecco), out April 3, 2018.

During the Winter Institute show, presentations by Acevedo, Frazier, and Williams will be mixed with music from Memphis-based soul band The Bo-Keys.

The event will take place from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 25, and will be followed by the Winter Institute closing reception, featuring the Thacker Mountain guests, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 p.m. in the Ballroom Foyer outside of Ballroom C.

The 2018 Winter Institute will be held January 22–25 at the Sheraton Memphis Downtown Hotel and the Memphis Cook Convention Center in Memphis, Tennessee. The institute is made possible by support from lead sponsor Ingram Content Group and from publishers large and small. Questions about Winter Institute can be addressed to [email protected]
