Here’s what’s happening this week in the world of book publishing and bookselling:
- BookExpo and the Association of American Publishers (AAP) announced two CEO panels during BookExpo 2018: “State of the Industry: Publishing and Copyright Policy” and “Leadership Roundtable: Publishers on Publishing.”
- IPG has signed distribution agreements with 10 new independent publishers, including Gilgamesh Publishing, Massey University Press, and J. Ross Publishing.
- The University Press of New England (UPNE) — the publishing consortium founded in 1970 and run for the last two years by Dartmouth College and Brandeis University — will shut down by the end of the calendar year. After that, the two institutions will take independent control of their own imprints.
- The 38th annual Los Angeles Times Book Prizes recognized 11 literary works published last year, including the March 2017 Indie Next List #1 pick Exit West by Mohsin Hamid for fiction, and Long Way Down by 2017 ABA Indies First spokesperson Jason Reynolds for young adult literature.
- The Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance (SIBA) has named 30 titles across eight categories as 2018 Southern Book Prize finalists, representing the best in Southern literature. Winners will be announced on July 4.
- Lambda Literary announced plans to honor Edmund White with the organization’s Visionary Award and Roxane Gay with Lambda’s Trustee Award at the 30th annual Lambda Literary Awards on June 4 in New York City.
- The MacDowell Colony has awarded fellowships to 84 artists from 18 states and six countries. Among those, the list features a number of writers, including 2018 Pulitzer Prize winner Andrew Sean Greer and poet Monica Youn.
