Cider Monday logoThe fourth annual celebration of Cider Monday, the bricks-and-mortar response to Cyber Monday, will take place this year on November 28, when locally owned businesses across the country will offer visitors a free cup of cider in appreciation for shopping at independent businesses.

“Customers are promised cider and smiling servers that will not crash,” explained Willard Williams, co-owner of New Hampshire’s three Toadstool Bookshops and founder of Cider Monday, which began in 2013 in New England.

“As always, we’ll offer personal service, advice, and the opportunity to touch and try items — with no log-ins or passwords necessary! Join us in taking a bite out of Cyber Monday,” Williams said.

On Cyber Monday, the Monday after Thanksgiving and following Black Friday, many retailers offer discounts and deals to encourage holiday shoppers to make purchases online. In recent years, locally owned, independent stores have presented Cider Monday as an alternative and a refuge from the frenzy and a reminder of the contributions that bricks-and-mortar stores make to local communities.

Williams said he is hoping to see bookstores across the country join Toadstool Bookshop in celebrating Cider Monday; all independently owned businesses are welcome to participate.

A full list of participating businesses can be found on the Cider Monday website; businesses interested in joining the list of participants celebrating Cider Monday can contact Monadnock Buy Local, a network of Southwestern New Hampshire citizens, businesses, and organizations promoting the benefits of shopping local.
