This October, the American Booksellers Association will present “Principles of Finance,” a new workshop for booksellers involved in bookstore budgeting and overall financial forecasting. The six-hour program will be held on Saturday, October 15, in Baltimore, Maryland, and on Wednesday, October 26, in San Francisco, California, prior to the start of the New Atlantic and Northern California independent booksellers association trade shows, respectively.

The workshops will be led by ABA Vice President Robert Sindelar, managing partner of Third Place Books in Seattle, Washington, and ABA Chief Financial Officer Robyn DesHotel.

The first part of this 101-level workshop will cover the fundamentals of budgeting, cash flow and forecasting, business financing, bookkeeping, and financial statement analysis. The second part will focus on strategies for achieving higher profits and improving cash flow and will include interactive group discussion. The program will conclude with a segment on how booksellers can use their store’s financial information to reach sound business decisions.

The workshop will concentrate on bookstore finances as opposed to bookstore accounting, and, though it will be helpful for attendees to be familiar with basic bookstore finances, deep financial experience is not required.

Booksellers who are interested in attending either workshop are encouraged to save the date. Watch for complete details and the opening of registration to be announced in upcoming editions of Bookselling This Week.
