  • Rules for Werewolves, Kirk Lynn
    Melville House, 9781612194769, October 13, 2015 (Fiction)

This novel is funny, dark, weird, and addictive. A unique, engaging way to tell a story and a fresh way of looking at American culture, youth, and class. At turns I was reminded of Christopher Moore and Chuck Palahniuk, but Lynn's voice is all his own.

Kirk Lynn’s debut novel makes masterful use of the chops he learned as a playwright. Much of RULES FOR WEREWOLVES is dialogue and Lynn holds the tension taught as the action is always on the verge of chaos or spinning out of control. The “werewolves” are outsiders, runaway squatters that make up a pack of youths alienated by selfish parents and the rules regulating a society that feels strangling. They want to escape and form their own outlaw family of like-minded people to take on a world that has become cold to their frustration and experience. Lynn’s book is propelling and, even though most of the violence happens offstage, jarring. It has elements of some of my favorite authors like Dennis Cooper, Russell Banks, and Sam Sheppard while never feeling necessarily influenced by them. It stands as its own new and exciting work.
