Kurt Vonnegut Dies at 84

Kurt Vonnegut, considered a key figure in 20th-century American literature, died April 11 at 84. He had suffered brain injuries resulting from a recent fall at his Manhattan home, said his wife, photographer Jill Krementz. Vonnegut's more than a dozen books, short stories, essays, and plays, including Slaughterhouse-Five, Cat's Cradle, and most recently A Man Without a Country -- offered elements of social commentary, science fiction, and autobiography via dark humor and satire.

MPIBA Announces 2007 Book Award Winners

The Mountains and Plains Independent Booksellers Association (MPIBA) has announced the winners of its 2007 Regional Book Awards. The awards honor outstanding books set in the MPIBA region, which includes Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, Utah, Idaho, Texas, Montana, Kansas, Arizona, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and South Dakota.

Presentation of the awards will be a highlight of the MPIBA banquet at the Doubletree Hotel in Austin, Texas, on Friday, March 30, 2007. The banquet is open to the public.

Kansas Booksellers Honored With Phoenix Award

Pat Kehde and Mary Lou Wright, founders and co-owners of 19-year-old The Raven Book Store in Lawrence, Kansas, were recently named the recipients of the 2006 Phoenix Award in the category of Literary Arts by the Lawrence Arts Commission. The Phoenix Awards have been presented annually since 1996 in eight categories, and the Literary Arts Award is customarily granted to a writer.

Osondu Booksellers Makes Progress in Oprah Campaign

This past July, Margaret Osondu of Osondu Booksellers in Waynesville, North Carolina, launched a campaign to bring her store, and independent booksellers as a whole, to the attention of Oprah Winfrey. Her persistence has finally garnered a response: According to Shelf Awareness, an employee of Harpo Entertainment, Winfrey's production company, contacted Osondu and requested that she send a video of the store and town.

WNBA Calls for Nominations of Outstanding Children's Booksellers

The Women's National Book Association (WNBA) is seeking nominations for the Lucile Micheels Pannell Awards, honoring bookstores that excel at inspiring interest in reading and creatively bringing books and young people together. WNBA will present the awards to two bookstores -- one general and one children's specialty bookstore -- at BookExpo America 2007 in New York City.

Kiran Desai, Kate Grenville, M.J. Hyland, Hisham Matar, Edward St Aubyn, and Sarah Waters are the six authors shortlisted for the U.K.'s 2006 Man Booker Prize for Fiction. The shortlist was announced by the chair of judges, Hermione Lee, at a press conference in London on Thursday, September 14. The winner will be announced on October 10 at an awards ceremony at the Guildhall, London.
