This week, Tattered Cover Book Store in Denver, Colorado, in partnership with BurstMarketing, launched a free, weekly podcast show, Authors on Tour -- Live, on the web at www.authorsontourlive.com. Page & Palette Owner Continues the Fight Against Wal-Mart

Fairhope, Alabama, a city of approximately 12,000 residents, is in the midst of an ongoing fight to keep big box retailers, including Wal-Mart, out of its surrounding area. This past August, a group of concerned citizens -- including bookseller Karin Wilson of Fairhope's Page & Palette bookstore -- formed "A Fair Hope of Success," to ensure the continued viability of Fairhope's downtown businesses. "A Fair Hope" formed in response to rumors of a Wal-Mart opening in the area.

Black Friday: Booksellers Hold Their Own -- Many Look for Gains as Holidays Near

While media reports about overall retail sales for the Thanksgiving weekend were mixed, with the New York Times reporting that "consumers mobbed discount chains ... but largely shopped right past other specialty retailers at the mall" and the National Retail Federation calling it a brisk start to the holiday shopping season, a sampling of independent booksellers from across the country found most meeting or slightly exceeding sales of a year ago.

New York Times Mistake Affects Women & Children First

Last week, the New York Times ran a story about the behavior of children and their parents in the cafes and restaurants of Chicago's Andersonville neighborhood. The piece incorrectly stated that mothers were not attending events at the bookstore Women & Children First because children had been "kicked out for standing, talking, or sipping drinks" and "a retail clerk at the bookstore [had] asked a woman to stop breast-feeding last spring."

Changing Hands in Tempe, Arizona, launched Sen. John McCain's (R-AZ) national book tour for Character Is Destiny (Random House) this past Saturday to a standing-room-only audience.
